Graphite Pencil Set ( $8.99 - $19.99 )
Hobby Lobby has several sets in the isle by the framing department. Some include an eraser and sharpener which you will need anyway.
Be sure it is a “graphite” set, not charcoal.
You’ll want a range of leads that go from B’s to H’s. Some sets are mostly B’s (very dark) and some sets are mostly H’s (very light) But most of the sets you will see have a medium range of shades. This is what you want.
Summer Sketching Class
All pricing, suggestions and photographs were taken from Hobby Lobby.
Lap Board
This can take the place of a drafting table. Just a large board with clips at the top and a band at the bottom to hold your work. You can sit it in your lap and balance it on the edge of a table while you work. It’s slightly precarious but if you’re low on money it’s a good alternative.
This art board is 22” x 25” and is at Michaels for $15. I did see one at Hobby Lobby, also.
Pencil Sharpener
Just a little handheld sharpener will be fine.
White Eraser ( $1.19 - $3.99 )
Hobby Lobby has a ton of white erasers to choose from.
Choose white, not the brown, pink or black.
Sketching Pad ( $3.99 - $9.99 )
No need to get fancy here. Any size from 9 x 7 to 9 x 12 will do for young students. Older students may want a larger pad. Something big enough to feel unconstricted, yet not huge.
These items are NOT necessary, but could be fun additions to your class if you want to get some extras.
Pencils
No need to get a set of pencils for this class. Just a #2 is all that is necessary.
Jim’s Drafting Tables
A friend of mine has made all the tables that we will use in class. It is not at all a necessity to have one of these for sketching at home. These are pictures of the prototype. If you would like one for your home please let me know asap. Two boards that store easily with the board come out and provide 2 levels of elevation that I find adequate.
Dimensions: 15” x 22” Much smaller and happily more compact than the Hobby Lobby version. Some adults may prefer the larger table. Up to you.
Cost:
$25 - raw wood (this is what I will be using)
$30 for stain and varnish
